A new blaze in the northern sky. There are few things more satisfying than watching a good band become great. Insomnium’s first two albums were sturdy and engaging, bursting with potential. Here, on their third, the Finns’ evolution is writ large, as every riff, melody and dynamic flourishs screams the band’s newfound superiority. This is widescreen melodic death metal; precise and powerful but possessed by the spirit of Scandinavia’s foreboding landscapes. Not since Opeth’s first two records has metal sounded this vas, stirring and darkly romantic. From the sublime hooks of “Mortal Share” to the electric funeral of the closing “in the Groves of Death” this is immaculate.
