Finns lob a musical grenade at the Swedes. It’s impossible to persue such finger-shredding gallantry without being instantly reminded of In Flames’ achievements. but in “…Weeping World”, Finns Insomnium have not merely pushed that Swedish envelope, they’ve stuffed it with a stick of dynamite, without eschewing any of the hallmarks that have made the melodic death metal such a ubiquitous and seminal sound. Lose yourself in the epic sway of album opener “The Gale” as it bleeds into the startlingly progressive, Opeth-conjuring finesse of “At the Gates of Sleep”. Persist, and staccato riffs and throat-ripping vocals morph into elegant, spine-tingling harmonies that make powerful, vital metal listening.
