I was born 30.04.1980 in Kristiinankaupunki (west coast of Finland). When I was four years old we moved to city of Joensuu (eastern Finland) where I spent my youth. In college I met my band mates and you can read the rest of this detailed event from our biography. I got into metal music when I was in elementary school mainly through our drummer Markus's influence. Metallica and Sepultura were the first bands. Later I discovered melodic death metal: In Flames - Subterranean, Amorphis – Tales From the Thousand lakes, Sentenced – Amok,  At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul and Dark Tranquillity - Gallery. These bands ignited the spark to learn to play guitar and compose music myself.

I started to play guitar at the age of 16. I've never taken any lessons. I’m definitely more of a songwriter than a player. I just love composing music and it gives my life solace and a purpose. Besides Insomnium I use to play guitar in Joensuu-based dark/thrash/black-metal outfit Arrival and bass in Jyväskylä-based melodeath-act Enter My Silence. We made one album with Arrival titled “An Abstract of Inertia”, which was released in 2002 through Edgerunner records. After this, we also recorded a new promo with Arrival in somewhere 2005 but it was never released and band ceased to exist around that time. I also recorded one album with Enter My Silence titled Coordinate: D1Sa5St3R. The album was released through JMT Music in 2006 and got praising reviews. However, collaboration with JMT Music was close to a catastrophe and band got nowhere despite releasing a good album. This situation eventually led to lack of motivation and Enter My Silence was put to rest.

Besides Insomnium, I currently work as a postdoctoral researcher (evolution, ecology & microbiology) in the University of Exeter, UK.
